Introducing Solutions for Heating Small Areas

2 loop tank mounted pacemaker with fan center and domestic hot water ports.

For several years, we've been offering complete radiant heating packages to homeowners, builders and the average do-it-yourselfer. Typically, we´re able to produce a customized solution that works for projects ranging in size from 1,500 square feet up to 10,000 square feet and sometimes even larger. A majority of these projects fall into the 2,500 to 6,000 square foot range. For these, a high-efficiency heat source in an open or indirect system makes a lot of sense. Smaller areas, lower heat loads and lower budgets require a different solution. The solution we have developed is a closed radiant package with lower output heat sources designed specifically to meet this need.

Let's quickly define the three types of radiant systems:

An Open System just indicates that the water in the radiant floor heating system freely mingles with the domestic hot water.

An Indirect System would separate the domestic hot water from the radiant system by way of a heat exchanger kit.

A Closed System would only heat the radiant system and you´d need a separate heat source for domestic hot water.

Pacemaker with trim kit.Our small area packages are offered as closed systems with smaller capacity water heaters. This means you will need an additional water heater for your domestic hot water. One of our sales/support technicians will walk you through our sizing and pricing process to insure the proper solution for your project requirements. The gas-fired packages are designed for projects up to at least 1,500 square feet. The electric water heaters will heat up to 600 square feet. Larger projects will require heater sizing upgrades or alternate heat sources. Of course, the larger the project, the more critical efficiency becomes. Our Bock, Polaris and T-200 packages are available here for projects 1,000 square feet and up, where higher efficiency is a factor.

Follow these simple steps to find the size and cost for your application

  1. Use the chart below to find the amount of tubing you will need.
  2. Choose the type of fuel you will use.
  3. Choose the type of boiler you will use.
  4. Add the few extra's needed to install your package.

Step One : Get an estimate of the required tubing amount

TYPE AREA IN SQUARE FEET
Quick Calc
Multiply Sq. Ft. by .75 for Slabs 1.0 for Lumber Overlay 1.5 for Staple-Up
Add 500' for vaulted areas or areas of high heat-loss.
TUBING AMOUNT
BASE
MAIN
UPPER
OTHER
GARAGE
OTHER
Round tubing total up to nearest 500´
Some older homes may need more tubing. SIP's, ICF's and well insulated homes may need less.

Step Two: Choose your fuel and heat source.

Electric: Electric heaters should only be used to heat small areas such as a bathroom, kitchen or small addition.

Natural Gas: This is your best choice for radiant floor heat if it is available. It will cost less per month, is very clean, and fuel pricing is generally stable..

Propane: Propane is typically more expensive than natural gas or oil, but is often the best solution where those fuels are not available or when propane is already on site for other reasons..

Basic packages include one of the following Ruud PaceMaker water heaters:

  • 4.5 kW 50 gallon Electric (E2)
  • 4.5 kW High-Efficiency 50 gallon Electric (E3R (HE))
  • 40,000 BTU 40 gallonNatural Gas or Propane (40N or 40LP)
  • 50,000 BTU 60 gallonNatural Gas or Propane (50N or 50LP)
  • 70,000 BTU 75 gallon - Natural Gas or Propane (70N or 70LP)

1/2" PEX tubing, T&P relief valve, Brass Zone manifolds, Zone actuators, High Head Bronze circulating pump, Brass fittings, PEX adapters, Extra PEX repair couplings, Tubing cutter, Closed System Kit (expansion tank, float vent), Brass Manifold and Control Box mounted on 3/4" Melamine, pressure and electrical tested.

Complete Instructions and delivery included in continental U.S. Tubing layout included with complete packages.

Step Three: Pricing

Use the amount of tubing on the left , go acress to the heater of your choice:

Tankit

For those customers who have an existing heat source they would like to tap into, we have developed these kits. The Tankit includes the parts needed to turn your water heater into a heat source for a small radiant heating system. Water heaters are very limited in their capacity and can only heat small areas, they are also very inefficient and not practical for large areas.

Sizing

YOU WILL NEED THIRTY BTU'S PER SQ. FT. OF FLOOR SPACE. MOST WATER HEATERS ARE ABOUT 70% EFFICIENT. MULTIPLY THE INPUT RATING ON YOUR HEATER BY .70 TO FIND ITS CAPACITY. YOU WILL NEED AT LEAST 20,000 BTU'S ADDITIONAL FOR DOMESTIC HOT WATER.

Tankit Packages

Includes: Brass Circulating Pump, Brass Fittings, PEX Adapters, Relay and Transformer for Pump Control, Thermostat, MR. PEX w/O2 Barrier, Installation Instructions.
TUBING KIT PRICE
500' $800.00
1000' $1,100.00
1500' $1,400.00
2000' $1,700.00

To make any of these closed systems, add $100.00. Dual thermostat configuration available. Go back up to step 4 to complete your package.

Your sales and support technician is trained to help you with an accurate sizing assessment for your project. Give us a call, we can walk you through our process, answer your questions and work up the appropriate solution for your project in about 15 minutes.
